Earth Sciences
Alaska provides an unbeatable setting for studying the earth sciences.

Whatever sparks your interest in geology, meteorology, or oceanography, Alaska Pacific University is a great place to study earth science. Alaska is home to:

  • More than 40 active volcanoes
  • Over 40,000 miles of coastline
  • A temperature range of 180° Fahrenheit
  • North America’s tallest mountain peak
  • The longest and largest glaciers in North America
  • North America’s most powerful earthquake in recorded history
  • An arctic climate that is unusually sensitive to global warming
  • More wetlands than the rest of the United States combined
  • 3,000,000 lakes, 5,000 glaciers, and 3,000 rivers (give or take!)
  • One of the highest tidal ranges in the world
  • The world’s largest icefields outside Greenland and Antarctica
  • Eleven major mountain ranges

The Earth Sciences major at APU provides a solid, interdisciplinary foundation in the physical aspects of environmental science.

The Earth Science major provides an integrated curriculum in geology, meteorology, and oceanography and a solid foundation in laboratory and field techniques. The degree program is for students interested in the physical aspects of the environment as well as climate and climate change, water science and management, and ocean science and management. Traditional study of rocks and the earth structure is complemented in our program by study of allied topics, ranging from climate change to ecology, that provide a basis for the interdisciplinary work that now characterizes so much of the earth science field.

Majoring in Earth Sciences, students can earn either a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree.
