Anchorage holds major offices and laboratories of three Alaska state agencies of great relevancy to the Environmental Science Department.
These include:
- The State Department of Natural Resources (http://www.dnr.state.ak.us/), responsible for management of mineral, gas and oil extraction on state land, management of the state’s forests, and management of state parks, several of which are by far the largest in the U.S.
- The State Department of Environmental Conservation (http://www.dec.state.ak.us/)responsible for oversight of pollution control and mitigation efforts
- The State Department of Fish and Game (http://www.adfg.state.ak.us/), which manages, protects, and researches aquatic and terrestrial animal populations across the state
These departments have provided and currently provide our students with many opportunities, from summer employment, to academic advancement (Jr. Practicum, Sr. Project, M.Sc. research), to careers.
In addition, Chugach State Park (http://www.dnr.state.ak.us/parks/units/chugach/index.htm), which is only minutes from campus, and APU have a cooperative use agreement. The park is indeed, much like an extension of the APU campus.
