World travel, musical performances, real-world politics & more…
We take active learning seriously, both in the classroom and beyond. Throughout the school year, look to Liberal Studies to help expand your horizons with on- and off-campus events to engage you in mind and spirit.
Here are a sampling of the activities and opportunities that await you:
Alaska Legislative Intern Program
For students interested in politics, law, or justice, this semester long internship in Alaska’s historic capitol city of Juneau offers an unparalleled close-up look at government in action.
Student Showcase
What’s your art? Join other Liberal Studies for this annual APU event as you display your visual, spoken word, or performance art for a university-wide audience.
University Ensemble
Under the direction of Liberal Studies faculty, join other student musicians and vocalists in ensemble performance both on and off campus.
APU Journal
APU’s student-funded newspaper is written, edited, and designed by the Liberal Studies journalism class and welcomes freelance work from all students.
Eco-League
Along with APU students from all departments, Liberal Studies majors interested in environmental issues may study at one of five campuses in a nationwide consortium. See your adviser for more.
Public Education Projects
Liberal Studies is home to topical, community-wide projects to stimulate discussion and foster understanding. Recent efforts include a Ford Foundation grant to support a “common reading” project and promote civil discourse in relation to controversial or difficult subjects. One such project involved fostering an understanding of Islam. The Liberal Studies Department, through its Cardinal Newman Chair, organized a year-long series of talks and events on and off campus focused on learning more about Islam past and present.
Travel Courses
You’ll never venture alone when you join a Liberal Studies-sponsored travel course aimed at exploring culture, language, history and art. Recent tours have taken us to Greece, Italy and South America. See your advisor for more information.
