What is the Cardinal Newman Chair?
John Henry Cardinal Newman was a 19th century English educator, philosopher, Anglican priest, and theologian. After research, prayer, and reflection, Newman sought entry into the Roman Catholic Church. Because of his abiding love for education, Newman's name has identified a Catholic presence on state and private universities throughout the U.S.

The Cardinal Newman Chair at APU
The Cardinal Newman Chair is supported by an endowment from the Carr family. Archbishop Hurley named this Chair after John Henry Cardinal Newman. The Chair is now occupied by biblical scholar and theologian Dr. Regina A. Boisclair with graduate degrees from Providence College, Yale, Temple University, and a capstone program at the École Biblique de Jérusalem.
What does the Newman Chair Do?
Dr. Boisclair teaches courses in religion, scripture, and theology at APU. One of the responsibilities of the Cardinal Newman Chair is to provide education and faith formation opportunities for interested adults in the Anchorage area. Members of the community can audit Newman Chair courses as “Newman Observers” for a modest enrollment fee. In addition to courses, the Chair sponsors guest lectures, fora, conferences, and other special events that bring students and community members together.
