We focus on the competencies necessary to make you ready for careers in counseling psychology.
To accomplish our departmental mission and to ensure students are fully prepared for service in the field or for further education, the entire curriculum is based upon six distinct competencies. These competencies include:
- Self -understanding
- Critical thinking
- Creative expression
- Knowledge of Discipline
Courses are designed around these competencies with different courses in the department emphasizing different competencies. For example, Intimacy, Relationships, and Sexuality may emphasize self-understanding and creative expression, while Methods of Investigation: Research in Psychology may focus on the competencies of critical thinking and activism. However, by the time a student has completed their required 48 credit hours in the major, they will have been actively engaged in active learning tasks helping them to mastering each of the competencies many times.
