Ana’s primary research interests lie in the field of bioacoustics. She is interested in using non-lethal methods (i.e., sound) to investigate population dynamics of overexploited marine species. In practice, that means she has used passive sounds for determining distribution, seasonality, and population structure of baleen whales as part of her doctoral work at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. While working as a post-doctoral researcher at the NOAA Fisheries Southwest Fisheries Science Center, she used both passive and active acoustics for rockfish population estimation.
During her research trips to the Southern Ocean and Southern California Bight, Ana has collected almost a year of sea-time as an acoustician on numerous scientific cruises. Results of her work have been published in a number of scientific journals, including Deep-Sea Research II, the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, and Journal of Cetacean Research and Management.
As a new arrival to Alaska, Ana is excited about the opportunities the state offers, and she plans to expand her acoustics research on the sound repertoires of fishes (rockfishes and cod in particular) to include areas in southcentral Alaska. She is also keen to explore the state, on foot, in a kayak, and in SCUBA (since swimming does not seem like the best idea).
