I love to teach. I feel energized when I can share with others the things I care about, and in turn provide an atmosphere that encourages students to share with me what matters to them. I feel hopeful about the future of the world as I interact with those who will create it.
Despite a short stint as a weaver and fabric artist, my career has focused primarily on teaching courses such as Intimacy, Relationships, and Sexuality, Positive Psychology, and Professional Ethics. A few years ago a colleague and I combined our love of mystery stories and our interest in women's issues to develop a course called Psychology of Women for Mystery Lovers.
I am a licensed psychologist and certified by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (ASSECT) as a sex therapist diplomate. For ten years I co-edited the journal Women & Therapy and for eleven years co-edited a book series called “Innovations in Feminist Therapy.” I believe in the importance of writing for publication and try to give my students the requisite skills and motivation.
My most recent books are Featuring Females: Feminist Analyses of Media and Jewish Mothers Tell Their Stories: Acts of Love and Courage. Other books include: Wilderness Therapy for Women: The Power of Adventure; Refugee Women and their Mental Health; and Women and Sex Therapy: Closing the Circle of Sexual Knowledge.
I’m active in local and national psychology organizations, and I encourage my students to become involved as well. I’m immediate past-president of the Alaska Psychological Association (AK-PA) and president-elect of a division of the American Psychological Association (APA), The Society for the Psychology of Women.
I love to play tennis, kayak, hike, and fast walk. (So far I’ve walked three marathons and many half-marathons, and I usually get a medal because of my age, not my speed.) If I had to make a career change today, I might become a dog musher or a park ranger, or do something else that would let me stay outside all day in this beautiful state of Alaska.
