Journeys

What is Journeys?

Journeys is a tradition at APU, run by Outdoor Programs. It's a backcountry excursion through the Alaskan wilderness for all new students (Freshmen, Transfers, Early Honors and Graduates). You'll be joined by a handful of APU's finest staff and student leaders, while you learn about yourself and each other in Alaska's outdoor classroom. All new students are encouraged to participate.

You have a choice of several different trips into some of the most beautiful wilderness in Alaska, with plenty to see and do for everyone. Past students say that Journeys is one of the most memorable experiences at APU.

All experience levels are welcome - from the complete novice to the accomplished outdoorsperson. If you are new to Alaska, Journeys will be your first glimpse of our state's truly awe-inspiring beauty. Journeys teaches students valuable skills that will help you stay safe while you explore Alaska during your years at APU. You’ll learn what’s necessary for safe backcountry travel and how to set up camp with minimal impact on the environment. If you've been traveling the Alaska backcountry your whole life, take this opportunity to learn a new skill or explore a new area, and to create new friendships before you start classes.

Past Journeys Trips

On these trips students will have the opportunity to discuss their goals for and expectations of college. Upperclassmen will share their experiences as a student and as a member of the APU Community, while sharing tips on how to make the best of your time here at APU. Journeys is a great time to collect your thoughts and mentally prepare yourself for all the information and fun of Orientation and the start of classes back on campus.

Some of these trips will take place in fairly remote wilderness. There are some inherent risks associated with participation. These risks will be further explained in the pre-trip meetings. Please read the waiver and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
