The Trips
Journeys 2008 - South Central Alaska
All of these trips will involve traveling and camping in the wilderness of Alaska. These are participatory trips, meaning we will work together as a group setting up camp, cooking, cleaning, finding water and living lightly on the land.

Sea Kayaking
On this trip, we will water taxi through Passage Canal to explore the spectacular Blackstone Bay where mountains rise straight out of the ocean, topped with majestic glaciers, to form an amazing backdrop for our paddling as well as hiking from camp. Accessible only by boat, and home to otters, seals, porpoise and whales as well as eagles, moose, and black bear, this area is a critical wildlife habitat. The bay is also home to active tidewater glaciers.
Never been in a kayak before? Don’t worry, you’ll spend the first day in the pool learning the necessary skills to paddle in the Alaskan wilderness.

Rafting
This scenic float trip will bring paddlers down the Chulitna River, just south the mighty Alaska Range. If the weather is cooperative this trip will provide participants with better views of Mt. McKinley than any of the other trips. Rapids up to class II will be encountered early in the trip and clear tributary streams throughout may provide excellent fishing for trout, grayling and dolly varden. All rafting equipment will be provided but if you intend to fish an Alaska State fishing license must be obtained.

Backpacking
Envision towering granite spires reminiscent of the high Sierra, plunging cascades feeding alpine lakes, and wildlife roaming through glacial carved valleys. This is the vast wilderness known as the Talkeetna Mountains, a range unlike any other in Alaska. We will spend seven days backpacking through remote alpine trails, bushwhacking, and soaking up the long summer days of Alaska. Opportunities abound for wildlife viewing and old mine ruins lay throughout various regions. This trip is not be for the faint of heart so some experience backpacking will be helpful in addition to a moderate level of physical fitness.
* Trip routes may alter depending on weather conditions and the abilities of the group.
