Campus Undergraduate Program

Business Administration

Alaska Pacific University’s business administration programs are designed to support business and professional careers. These programs meet the educational needs of students by offering a curriculum rich in active learning. At the undergraduate level the department offers a Professional Management Certificate, an Associate of Arts degree in Business Administration, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration.

The following Degree Objectives are specified in each student’s Junior Portfolio and serve as the goals for the BA program. Students shall demonstrate:

Goals 1-3 are skill-based competencies, 4-6 are content-based competencies, and goal 7 is a value-based competency. Assessment of student achievement relies primarily on independent course evaluation coupled with departmental evaluation of senior projects. In addition, supervision of the internships permits close monitoring of student skills, particularly for the non-content-based competencies.

Certificate in Professional Management

The certificate in Professional Management is available for students who wish to obtain a basic understanding of modern management concepts and skills without having to complete all the requirements for a degree. It is appropriate for someone who already has a college degree but has no management training and wishes to gain such expertise. It is also appropriate for individuals without a college degree, but who now find themselves in a supervisory management position. The Management Certificate curriculum is designed to fit the unique needs of individuals and employers.

The Certificate Program requires between six to eight courses at a minimum in business administration for a total of 24 Credit Hours. The exact subject areas will depend on individual or corporate needs, and will be determined by the faculty advisor.

Classes may be conducted off-campus at company locations. Students may choose to attend regularly scheduled classes on campus. These courses can be applied toward an undergraduate degree. Persons desiring the Professional Certificate must apply to the university and be admitted as a certificate seeking student.

Associate Of Arts Degree Major

The Associate of Arts Degree is a two-year degree in Business Administration for those students who currently do not desire a fouryear degree. Students must also complete eight courses under General University Requirements in addition to the departmental requirements and electives. The Associate of Arts major in Business Administration provides a basic understanding of business principles and prepares the student for entry-level positions in business. Associate of Arts Degree courses can be applied toward a Bachelor of Arts Degree at a later time.

Bachelor Of Arts Degree Major

This major provides the skills for those interested in business administration, entrepreneurship, or nonprofit management. The program of study consists of course work, internship, and directed study leading to a senior project. Business and management skills are learned in an active learning environment that includes internships, directed studies, independent work, and research. Small class sizes allow for significant one on one interaction between the student and faculty. Internship experience required at sophomore, junior, and senior levels help students learn by doing, while allowing the application of theory to practice.

The business core consists of 32 credits of courses in business, accounting, economics, finance, and data analysis; 8 credits of internships in, junior, and senior levels, and a 12 credit senior project. Electives are available for focused study of any subject within business or other discipline of students’ interests.

Transfers

For all transferring juniors Foundations of Business, Sophomore Seminar, and Internship II, including Internship II Seminar, may be waived on a case by case basis. All transfer students are required to take at least one Internship (plus the Internship Seminar) at Alaska Pacific University.

Preparing to become Certified Public Accountants

Those students wishing to become certified public accountants must graduate with 150 hours (State of Alaska’s requirement for certification) of college credits. These students are advised to take courses in accounting as specified in the Statute and Regulations of Public Accountancy, Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development, Division of Occupational Licensing. Please see faculty advisor for specific details. Accounting courses may be taken under intermediate and advanced studies menu courses.

Business Administration Minor

The Business Administration minor is intended for students majoring in other fields who wish to build the skills demanded by businesses, public entities, and not-for-profit organizations. This minor is not available to business administration majors.
