![]() Master of Arts ProgramMeet the Program Director![]() Karen McCain is the director of the Master of Arts Program. Karen McCain, Assistant Professor in Education, began her trek to Alaska nearly 35 years ago. After graduating from Towson University in Maryland with a B.S. in Education, Karen packed a VW and headed to Anchorage. The lure of the classroom held her as an Anchorage School District teacher for over twenty years. After retirement, Karen began traveling to rural Alaska working with educators throughout the state. She has been an institute leader in Reading Institutes and offered workshops in many rural areas. At Alaska Pacific University, Karen has taught in the education department for over fourteen years. The joy of teaching methods courses and working with student teachers have helped to keep the “wonder of education” alive. Mentoring and advising MAP students adds a new depth of research and current best practices to the forefront. To enjoy the wonders of Alaska, Karen enjoys scuba diving, kayaking, fishing, camping and relaxing at the cabin that she and her husband built on a recreational lake. The glory of being at this stage in your life - the “joy of grandchildren” and the opportunities to travel throughout our great country. Alaska Pacific University – a wonderful place to work and share the excitement of education with many people. The best thing about APU – without a doubt, the opportunities and the students. Everyday new ideas, challenges and laughter fill the halls and campus of APU. |
