Master of Arts Program

Thesis Guidelines

The Thesis Committee

In the third, or final phase of study (the Thesis or Capstone phase), students are required to assemble a thesis committee of three: the academic advisor and at least one other with appropriate academic qualifications. One member may be an "outside reader" (or evaluator) who lacks academic credentials but who nevertheless possesses other qualifications which make him or her well-suited to the role of committee member.

Students work closely with the entire committee (which is usually chaired by the academic advisor) to bring the final project to completion.

The Thesis "Defense"

In addition to a final presentation of your MAP work to your MAP peers at one of the quarterly colloquia (see below), all graduating students are required to offer a final formal presentation of their work to their thesis committee and any others whom they wish to invite to such an event. The MAP program director can help to schedule classroom or theatre use at APU.

Options for this requirement range from a more or less traditional "defense" of one's thesis, to a public performance, to a presentation of your choice to an audience of your own choosing. Decisions regarding what medium and content seem most appropriate are best achieved in discussion with your thesis committee.

Final Presentation to MAP Colleagues

MAP students are required to present twice at the quarterly MAP colloquia during their MAP careers -once in the Research or Practicum phases of their study and once at or toward the conclusion of their Thesis phase. These semi-formal half-hour presentations should allow time for questions and comments. Please rehearse your presentation ahead of time and know that the program director will be rigid about enforcing time limits, out of consideration for others.

Thesis Format and Submission of Two Copies of Completed Work to MAP Director

Please see this document, from the University of Alaska Anchorage website, for formatting considerations. The UAA/APU Consortium library, which also binds them, is the repository for all MAP thesis manuscripts.

Please submit two copies of your work to the MAP director. One may be informally bound (Kinko's offers a number of options); the library copy should be loose-leaf.
