Student Profiles

Danna Grant, MBAHSA

Undergraduate Degree:
Bachelors in Nursing Science at UAA.
Employment:
I am the Director of Nursing for Alaska Spine Institute Surgery Center. This is a physician owned ambulatory surgery center.
Career Goals:
Receive a master's degree from APU that would further my knowledge in the management of a health care organization.
Why APU:
The MBA with a health care administration track became available during my first six months of my new position and fit in with the education advancement that I was seeking. Alaska Spine Institute is on APU's campus which makes it convenient. APU offers evening classes and small class sizes.
Favorite feature of the MBAHSA Program:
I am not only a student but part of the APU family. I know the Director of the program on a personal level and feel that APU truly cares about my education goals.
Advice for future MBAHSA students:
My advice is to utilize the networking opportunities provided by the small class sizes and classroom speakers.

Evangelyn "Angel" Dotomain, MBAHSA

Undergraduate Degree:
International Business from Georgetown University
Employment:
I am a Professional Recruiter at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC). I recruit specialty physicians, engineers, midlevel practitioners, and for other hard to fill positions. I have worked for ANTHC for over six years first with their scholarship and internship programs. I am currently a member of ANTHC's Beta LEAD program, a great opportunity to learn and grow both personally and professionally.
Career Goals:
To assist my people in reaching the highest health status in the world through leadership, excellence, advancement, and determination.
Why APU:
I have been planning to obtain my MBA for a few years now and was trying to select a school where I would engage in active learning and be able to stay in Alaska. I researched many online programs, but continued to revisit APU. APU presented opportunities to learn from influential leaders from Alaska, who understand Alaskan issues, and who have a vested interest in Alaska's future. In addition, the individual attention afforded students is a great plus as I continue my journey in education, excellence, and life.
Advice for future MBAHSA students:
Take the time to determine the right program for you! A program where you will be valued as an individual, taught with care, and experience growth personally and professionally. If you do this, you will obtain the greatest education possible. I believe that I have found that in APU.

Vicki Faciane, MBAHSA

Undergraduate Degree:
BS in Occupational Education from Wayland Baptist University
Employment:
I am the Director of Respiratory Care, Sleep, and Neurodiagnostics for Providence Health System Alaska. I've been a Respiratory Therapist for almost 30 years and have worked for Providence for 19 years. I am an active member of the Alaska Society for Respiratory Care, having served as President, Vice President, Secretary, and Delegate at various times. In 2002 I was trained as a Master Change Facilitator through GE Medical Systems and later I was trained in Six Sigma methodology as a Green Belt. I have presented at local and state conferences on respiratory care topics such as asthma and pulmonary function testing.
Career Goals:
To further develop my business and organizational skills so that I may advance in my career. One day I hope to establish myself as a consultant in health care.
Why APU:
The emphasis in health care administration was the first draw for me. I was looking for an MBA program focused on health care but I didn't want to do anything online. Once at APU I was impressed by the personal attention given to students and the focus on experiential learning. In addition, classes are scheduled to meet the needs of working adults.
Favorite feature of the MBAHSA Program:
I really like the small class sizes and the personal attention from the instructors. Also, I like the fact that classes are scheduled in the evening hours when I'm available.
Advice for future MBAHSA students:
Before deciding on a program decide what characteristics are important to you then do some homework on your options. Make sure that the program you choose provides an environment that meets your own learning style.

Pat Johnston, MBA

Undergraduate Degree:
Organizational Management from APU
Employment:
I am the Vice President of Finance and Administration for Rise Alaska, LLC, a program/construction management firm. Current projects include the Ted Stevens International Airport and the Anchorage Museum expansion. Previous projects include the Alaska SeaLife Center, the Kodiak Launch Complex and the new Anchorage Jail.
Career Goals:
To bring leadership and develop the organizational structure within my current company in order to position it for continued growth and success.
Why APU:
The small class size and interactive/experiential learning style at APU is very attractive to me. The instructors are a great mix of academic and real world experience and typically utilize relevant current world situations for class projects. Working closely with fellow students in a team environment has been great. Many of the classes focus on projects that are process as well as results oriented. This develops skills in working relationships as well as technical knowledge.
Advice for future MBA students:
While the educational experience at APU is geared towards the individual, you will develop friendships and business contacts that will enhance your professional life. The content knowledge you will gain can be utilized in a variety of work environments from non-profit to corporate.

The APU MBA program helped me develop the professional and interpersonal communication skills that are an excellent complement to any analytical skill. I am confident that the skills I acquired at APU will help me advance both professionally and personally.
Advice for future MBA students:
The most important thing to consider when returning to college for an advanced degree is to determine what program will be right for you and will do the most to develop you both as a team member and team leader. There are a multitude of schools and programs to choose from, but be sure to factor in the level of personal attention that you will receive, since it will be critical to your success both during your program and afterwards.
