![]() Master of Science in Environmental ScienceMSES Graduate Assistantships Available for 2006-2007 Academic YearEach graduate program offers a limited number of graduate assistantships. The assistantships are available in the form of tuition waivers for a specific number of semester hours of course work. Graduate assistants provide research, instruction, or related project assistance for the department. The Graduate Assistantship application and the application procedures are included in the Graduate Application for Admission. Additional application procedures for the MSES Assistantships are listed below. Teaching AssistantshipsBiology Duties and Responsibilities: Develop familiarity with equipment in Biology and Chemistry labs. Set up, assist, and clean up weekly laboratory courses. Arrange, with departmental administrative assistant and biology instructor, for servicing, repair, or replacement of laboratory equipment. Qualifications: Degree in biology or related field. Prior laboratory experiences such as laboratory courses including: basic biology, chemistry, cell biology, physiology, genetics, microbiology, botany, zoology, etc. Chemistry Duties and Responsibilities: Lab work such as mixing solutions, calibrating instruments, organizing glassware, general lab upkeep. Also grading homework assignments and some tutoring. Qualifications: One year or more of college chemistry. GIS Lab Duties and Responsibilities: Installation of software, trouble-shooting of computer issues, assisting lab users with basic computing needs. Maintaining overall appearance of lab as a clean, quiet, working environment. Qualifications: Exhibit positive attitude, enthusiasm, and desire for helping people. Mathematics Duties and Responsibilities: Correcting homework papers and recording grades. Staffing the math lab to assist students in algebra through calculus. Qualifications: College mathematics through calculus or above with B or better average in math classes. Outdoor Studies Duties and Responsibilities: Assist teaching outdoor skills and expedition classes including search and rescue, hiking, canoeing, skiing, snow science/avalanche, rock/ice climbing, and/or mountaineering. Qualifications: Wilderness First Responder, extensive field experience teaching and leading groups in remote settings for extended (1 or more weeks) periods (e.g., NOLS/OB or like institutions). Research Assistantships(could include potential thesis topics) Canopy Science Duties and Responsibilities: Climbing ropes suspended from trees and collecting data on the forest canopy environment. Data error checking and analysis. Qualifications: Arborist climbing skills ideal, but rope skills such as rock and or ice climbing, sufficient. College course in ecology suggested, entomology a bonus. College mathematics through calculus or above. Experience working with others in a field environment. Climate Change Duties and Responsibilities: Field component includes visiting remote sites on Kenai Peninsula collecting vegetation data and tree cross-sections. GIS component includes working with images, DEMs; statistical analysis and display. Qualifications: College course in ecology suggested, botany a bonus. College courses in statistics, mathematics, or GIS. Experience working with others in a field environment. Marine Biology Duties & Responsibilities: Many aspects of marine laboratory and field work including live animal (octopus, fish, etc.). Routine maintenance of cold-water and tropical aquarium systems. Qualifications: Good organizational skills, work ethic, and attention to detail critical. Computer skills, familiarity with database structure, marine field experience, and experience with aquariums desirable. Environmental Social Science Duties and Responsibilities: Collecting primary and secondary data on collaborative, community-based conservation projects and assisting with on-going urban and rural field projects. Qualifications: Background or interest in natural resource management, land use planning, protected areas, urban or community forestry, or public involvement processes and methods. Experience in database management and demonstrated evidence of high quality research and writing skills. Assistantship Application ProcessSubmit your letter of interest to the attention of the Director, MSES Program, as a part of your application materials for the MSES Program. The letter of interest outlines not only why you are interested in a particular graduate assistantship, but also highlights the particular qualifications you offer. Application Deadlines are May 1 for the Fall semester and November 1 for the Spring semester. |
