Examples of Senior Projects

Spring 2002

Upcoming projects include Suanne's illustrated book on perennial plants that thrive in Anchorage's northern growing climate; the play, "The Peachtree", that Danio has written and will produce with the help of many APU students and that Leslie will choreograph for hers; and the collection of poetry that Jessica is assembling. Several other students are traveling, collecting experiences that they will parlay into projects in future terms.

Fall 2001

Photographer, writer, and mountain-climber Matt traveled to Nepal last winter, and will deliver his senior project of slides and written reflections of the trip this December.

When Eileen spent her practicum helping out in a third grade classroom, she began to wonder how the looming state-mandated benchmark exams might influence the teaching of certain skills. Her senior project examines the responses elementary school teachers made to questions on the relationship between those exams and their teaching of writing.

Spring 2000

Linda, a returning adult student, followed her passion for social justice through directed studies that explored specific legal issues that have impacted Alaska Natives. After a practicum, which entailed working in a law office under legal specialists who advocate for Alaska Natives, she prepared the groundwork for submission of a claim under the Alaska Native Land Claims Act and documented her experiences.

Film producer Peter wrote, directed, produced, scrounged up funding, and persuaded dozens of APU students and faculty to act in/make costumes for /and cheer on his 60 minute film, "Bedlam by Moonlight," an interpretation of the Faustian theme. He hopes to enter it in film festivals around the world. People stood in the aisles for this project presentation!

After travels through Europe as part of his practicum, internships in Washington D.C., and studies in politics and literature, Fish designed a website to highlight his studies of the modern city: "Necropolis Now" and submitted the project on CD-ROM. We'll all be able to say "We knew him when..." when he runs for national office one of these years.

European travels, mountain climbing, heavy doses of reading all contributed to the background for Jesse's collection of poetry and essays on poetics, which he delivered to guitar accompaniment in his public presentation.

Virginia matched poetry to her delicate drawings of plants and flowers for her project. Her presentation of the works was followed by a month-long show in one of the university's galleries.

Heather's explorations in women's studies and literature led her to the women writers of the Harlem Renaissance. She accompanied her paper with a PowerPoint show of related slides from the era.

Josh spent his practicum working with children in two Japanese language immersion kindergarten classrooms in Anchorage, and for his senior project designed and taught a class in Japanese for parents of these American children. After graduation, he traveled to Japan to teach English in a program sponsored by the Japanese government,

Sam, working under broadcasters from the local public radio station and our resident journalist, Kim Rich, wrote articles on and produced taped radio versions of the same stories as he explored differences in media presentation. Sam has recently been hired by a public radio station in Washington, DC.

Lauren wrote and produced a play for her junior practicum and a novella for her senior project, pulling from her studies in creative writing, drama, and literature. She went on to work for a commercial video production company and continues to write.

Another writer, Charmin, brought her love of poetry and Russian language to the challenge of translating Russian poetry into English. Travel through Russia helped her catch the flavor of the culture.
