Research assistanships, opportunities, internships for MS ES students and Marine Biology Junior practica and Senior projects.
With APU faculty
APU students in good standing only. For graduate assistanships, you must either be an APU master's student in Environmental Science or have applied to that program for admittance before you can be considered for these positions. For other opportunities, you must be an APU student or faculty member. All positions depend on availability of funds.
- Graduate Research Assistantship, available 25% time (2001-2002) and 50% time (2002-2003). Student will develop video system and survey design for autonomous underwater mini-Robot "Shadow" study of octopus foraging behavior. Student will coordinate design with two engineering teams at other universities and develop expertise in video systems and animal behavior sampling techniques. Field work in Alaska. Supported by NSF grant "Development of an autonomous underwater vehicle for behavioral studies of octopus and other marine animals by video technique."
- Graduate Research Assistantship or Senior Project, starting 2002: Applications accepted in Fall 2001 for possible position on killer whale research team, depending on available funding. Position would start Spring 2002. Student(s) may conduct field studies of killer whale behavior near Stellar sea lion haul-out and/or spatial analyses of killer whale distributions in Resurrection Bay. Computer skills, ability to work independently, small boat, marine safety skills, first aid experience/training desirable. Field work in Alaska. - Project funding: Funding exists to support APU undergraduate, graduate, and faculty projects and/or research in Marine Biology. Pre-proposal due 2 November 2001.

- Wildlife Legislation Internship: The Alaska Wildlife Alliance in Anchorage offers an internship opportunity available for spring of 2002. The intern will be responsible for tracking, evaluating and researching wildlife legislation, making written and oral reports on that legislation, and assisting in communal staff responsibilities.
