Marine Biology Department

Degree Requirements

Bachelor of Arts or Science in Marine Biology

The Bachelor of Arts or Science in Marine Biology is designed to provide students with expertise in the biological sciences as they apply to marine environments, as well as understanding of the world society in which knowledge of marine biology will be applied. General university requirements meet the liberal arts objectives. Core science requirements introduce the students to the physical and biological sciences, while electives allow an opportunity for students to explore areas within their major of particular interest.

Within this framework of degree requirements, student-directed, project-based learning is pursued in two parallel threads, both culminating in the Senior Project. In the first General University thread, students are introduced to this type of learning in their freshman year, take a project-based course for their Sophomore seminar, and must complete a practicum work experience in their Junior year. In the second Marine Biology thread, students participate in the Marine Biology Seminar, in which they make an in-dept exploration the literature in an area of their choosing. Students are also required to take one 300/400 level Marine Biology directed study of their own design, outside of their Senior Project.

David Scheel, Assistant Professor of Marine Biology, has created web pages featuring projects at the Prince William Sound Science Center as well as details of the Marine Biology program at APU. You can view Dr. Scheel's pages here.
