Cardinal Newman Chair

What is the Cardinal Newman Chair?

John Henry Cardinal Newman was a 19th century English educator, philosopher, Anglican priest and theologian. After research and reflection, Newman left the Church of England and sought entry into the Roman Catholic Church. Because of his abiding love for education, Newman's name has identified a Catholic presence on state and private universities throughout the U.S. When the Carr family made a donation to Alaska Pacific University establishing a Chair of Catholic Theology, Archbishop Hurley named this Chair after Cardinal Newman. That Chair is now occupied by Biblical scholar and theologian Dr. Regina A. Boisclair of Yale, Temple University and Ecole Biblique.

What Does the Newman Chair Do?

Dr. Boisclair teaches classes in scripture, theology and religion at APU. Because of the generous donation from the Carr family, members of the community can observe these classes (Newman Observers) for a modest enrollment fee. Although Observers do not receive credit for classes, neither are they required to take tests or submit papers, but can participate as they feel comfortable. In addition to classes, the Chair also sponsors guest lectures, conferences and other special events.
