Professional Development Credits and Continuing Education Units available. This course will explore the various kinds of literature collected in the Bible. From myth, saga and novella in Genesis, history in Samuel and Acts, hymns in Psalms, Wisdom texts, gospel, letters, sermons to apocalypses. It will consider the distinctive features of the various literary forms and how they are reflected in the text. In addition, how literary conventions: chiasmus, diatribe, oracle, function to promote ideas will also be discussed. This will focus on selections that have had a major influence on shaping understandings of humanity, the ideals of human behavior, and the world in which we live. This course offers a unique opportunity to explore the ideas and images that are reflected in the literature, art and music of Western civilization. While the theological aspects of these texts will not be emphasized in this course, features of contemporary biblical criticism as well as the distinct spiritual practice of Lectio Divina will be introduced.Engaging Muslims: February 13 - April 23, 2008 Newman Observer Fee: $95.
