It is incorporated into the fabric of the APU 100 Mile Club’s mission. This program encourages exploration and physical activity for students, staff, and faculty, to get out and enjoy all Alaska has to offer.

Alaska has a unique landscape — soaring mountains and endless trails, developed and maintained for skiing, running, mountain biking, hiking, and more. APU’s campus alone has 170 acres of urban wilderness to explore, including 4.5 km of trail in the Jim Mahaffey Trail System, which links up to Anchorage’s city-wide trail system, providing an all-access pass to maintained trails that stretch from the Chugach Range to Cook Inlet.

Chugach State Park sits on the edge of town with 495,000 acres to explore, and the combination of 120 miles of paved multi-use trails, 105 miles of maintained ski trails, 24 miles of lighted ski trails, and 130 miles of maintained winter walkways within the Municipality of Anchorage provide endless opportunities to get out and be active.

The APU 100 Mile Club was started in 2008, primarily to encourage physical activity during the winter months – as the days grow shorter and mid-terms and finals approach, supporting and encouraging engagement in physical activity is a means to help curb the effects of the darkness (seasonal affective disorder, depression, etc.). The APU 100 mile club is comprised of a group of students who are on-campus, off-campus, non-traditional, working adult, and distance education students, and also includes APU faculty and staff. The APU 100 mile club has flexible options for completion of miles and a 10-12 week time frame (fall/spring) in which to complete the 100 miles. In the summer, club participation expands to 200 miles, running roughly 14 weeks which provides an opportunity for increased activity and enjoyment of the Alaskan outdoors under the midnight sun. Each participant who completes the challenge receives a prize for participation. Past prizes include an APU stainless steel water bottle, APU beanie hat, APU socks, and APU technical tee-shirt.

I began taking classes at APU in Fall 2007 and remember the e-mails going out the following spring inviting students, staff, and faculty to join the APU 100 Mile Club. It sounded like an undertaking. At that time I was in a sedentary job and had the physical abilities that often go with that type of occupation. I continued to be interested in the club, but didn’t join because I was afraid of personal failure. Finally, I joined the APU 100 Mile Club in Fall 2011 and began logging my miles. What I initially noticed was the impact logging miles on a chart had on my motivation to be more active and to view every day things as a physical activity. Now that I have participated for the past 5 semesters, I find excitement in trying to achieve a “personal best” in mileage per term. Participating in the APU 100 Mile Club has been a significant motivating factor in remaining active, even on the coldest darkest days.

For more information about the APU 100 Mile Club, contact APU’s Housing and Residence Life Office, 564-8238.

History and Culture of Alaska Natives – Group Project

Liberal Studies
<guid

In the class, I ask: Is it possible to find or understand another’s truth through the lens of history and culture?

By the end of the course, I expect that participants will understand and be able to articulate why Alaska’s Native problems have never been solved. Students examine historical impacts of government policies on Alaska Native cultures and communities, and celebrate the incredible resilience of Alaska’s “original inhabitants. “

Daisy Greer (Early Honors) and Amanda Sasieta (Education) were very moved by Frontline’s video, “Silence,” which is about the impacts of sexual abuse by a Catholic priest and a layman in villages in western Alaska. Daisy and Amanda decided to do an art presentation to reflect what spoke to them individually about the issues raised by this video.

Daisy went the Alaska Native Heritage Center to learn how to make a drum, and painted the sun and moon communicating with each other. She contemporized the drum with an old phone handle and cord found in her neighbor’s yard, which she attached to the drum and the stick in her father’s wood shop. She loved the resilience shown in the dancing and drumming, and wanted to reflect the courage of those who broke the silence and helped others begin to heal.

Amanda was so moved by the image of the graveyard in St. Michael, she froze the frame and painted a picture of the graveyard. The shades of blue in Amanda’s painting reflect the sadness and pain inflicted by the Priest’s abuse on the community of St. Michael. It is hauntingly beautiful.

—Victoria Hykes Steere, Assistant Professor of Alaska Native Studies

Ecotheology and Pebble Mine

Liberal Studies
<guid

He chose this subject so that he could better understand why the American Orthodox Church had become involved in the debate surrounding this development. In January of 2011, Father Michael Oleska, along with other members of the American Orthodox Church, traveled to various villages in Southwest Alaska to bless the waters of Bristol Bay. These are waters that could potentially be affected by the tailings of the Pebble Mine project.

Ecotheology examines the intersection of religion and nature. For Sam, it was surprising to learn that “religions can address issues in a holistic manner that secular groups either cannot or do not.”

Sam’s inquiry concentrated on issues of community, morality, and spirituality, as well as the scientific principles underlying controversy. Sam says, “To fully address these concerns, religions must speak on matters affecting their congregations.”

Nora Marks Dauenhauer, Tlingit poet and Alaska State Writer Laureate, is APU commencement speaker on April 27

APU Spotlight
<guid

In addition to scholarly research and writing, she is a widely anthologized creative writer whose Raven plays have been performed internationally, including at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Her many honors include a lifetime achievement award in 2007 from the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Tribes of Alaska; induction in 2010 into the Alaska Women’s Hall of Fame; and winner in 1989 of an Alaska Governor’s Award for the Arts.

Semi-retired and living in Juneau, Dauenhauer has continued her research, writing and consulting and remains active in local volunteer work.

APU commencement begins at 2 p.m. at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium, University of Alaska Anchorage.

–

Accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, Alaska Pacific University is committed to personalized, experiential learning that incorporates Alaska as a principal classroom. APU is Alaska’s only four-year, private baccalaureate liberal arts university.

Career and Technical Education in an Adolescent Alaska Native Treatment Program

Master of Arts
<guid

We continually found ourselves referring to the importance of students leaving The Pathway Home with a powerful, positive vision for their futures. I have developed a model that will provide students with opportunities to explore career options while engaging in basic academic core curriculum to form the building blocks necessary for attaining long term self-sufficiency. My MAP project, Career and Technical Education in an Adolescent Alaska Native Treatment Program, consisted of working with TPH administration and staff to develop a career and technical education (CTE) model that can be employed within an Alaska Native adolescent residential treatment program. It combines the best research, effective curriculum, healthy activities, academic and career counseling, cooperation, collaboration, and resource coordination. I assert that this model will cultivate TPH students’ positive visions of their own futures and promote their readiness to attend either college or vocational training for successful transition into the workforce.

—-

Brenda Jones is a graduate of the APU Master of Arts Program.

Job Opportunity: Counseling Psychology and Human Services Department

Open Faculty Positions
<guid
