Satisfactory Academic Progress and Probation for Financial Aid

Federal Financial Aid regulations require Alaska Pacific University to establish a Satisfactory Academic Progress policy for students receiving financial aid. Further, we must notify students of that policy and monitor the progress of all students receiving financial aid to insure their continued compliance with the policy. It is the responsibility of all students receiving financial aid to familiarize themselves with the policy and to insure that the standards are met. Failure to meet the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress standards may place a student's future aid in jeopardy.

  • Undergraduate Students: All students must complete the number of credit hours per semester for which they were funded. Students are eligible for aid up to completion of 144 credit hours, including transfer hours.
  • Second Degree Undergraduates Students: All students must complete the following number of credit hours per semester for which the student is funded. Students are eligible for aid up to completion of 48 credit hours, including transfer hours, beyond the first degree.

The following credits do not meet the requirements for Satisfactory Academic Progress:

  • "I" Incomplete Grades
  • "F" Failure grades
  • Audited courses
  • Transfer credit not accepted by the university
  • Credit earned for which the student does not attend class (CLEP, Experiential Learning Credits, etc.)

Students must maintain "GOOD" financial aid standing in order to remain eligible for financial aid.

Financial Aid standings are:

  • GOOD (G) 0-4 hours deficient and student maintains Academic Good Standing as defined in this catalog

Deficient hours should be made up in addition to funded hours the following semester.

  • PROBATION (P) 5-7 hours deficient or fails to maintain Academic Good Standing as defined in this catalog.

The student must make up enough hours in addition to the funded hours during the probation semester to return to good standing (0-4) range. Additionally, the student must maintain or return to Academic Good Standing as defined in this catalog during the probation semester. Failure to regain good standing in one semester of probation will result in suspension of financial aid.

  • SUSPENSION (S) 8 hours deficient, or fails their probation semester.

The student is suspended from financial aid. In order to return to good standing the student, at their own expense, must complete six (6) hours in one semester. Additionally, the student must maintain or return to Academic Good Standing as defined in this catalog. The student may take the hours at another institution but the hours must transfer to APU.

This policy is the standard that students who receive federal financial aid must meet to continue receiving student aid. There is a separate policy for Academic Standards of Satisfactory Progress that can be found in the Undergraduate Academic Policy section of this catalog.
