Kellogg Farm in Summer

APU Kellogg Campus

Spring Creek Farm
Palmer, AK
~Center for the Study of Nature and Sustainable Living~

Bringing a Group to the Farm

Spring Creek Farm is a wonderful resource for the APU community and for other public groups looking for a conference/meeting/educational venue both indoors and out. The farmhouse has 6 beds, a computer lab, full kitchen, 3 bathrooms, and an extremely homey feel. There is plenty of indoor space from our newly added yurt and the modified chicken coop. The farm also offers 700 acres of fields and forest.

The facilities are available free of charge for APU groups and for a fee to public groups not associated with the University. The base charge for public groups is $4.00 per person/day for day use (includes use of buildings, trails, restroom/kitchen facilities and limited selection of hot drinks available in the kitchen.)

Overnight fees are $8.00 per person/day.

We ask that interested groups/classes take the following steps in order to make sure we can accommodate as many folks as possible who wish to use the farm.

  1. Email Steve (see contact info below) as far in advance as possible with a request to bring a group to the farm. Please use the subject heading "Request to Bring Group to Spring Creek Farm".
  2. In that email, include the following: number in your group, date/time of arrival, date/time of departure, purpose of visit, special requests, and contact person with email and phone number.
  3. You will receive a response as quickly as staff can get to it (usually within 1 week).
  4. Confirm that you received the response with an email.

The following is information to help in getting to the farm as well as a list of house rules for your stay on the farm.

The Kellogg House

DeWolf Kellogg Campus

Welcome to the Kellogg House! Please take some time to read this information booklet. It contains suggestions as well as protocols for while your stay here. There is also technical information such as; the location of light switches, cleaning procedures, and the contents of drawers/cabinets.

Directions

Take the Glenn Highway North to Palmer. Pass through Palmer, (both traffic lights) and continue on for approximately 3 miles to Farm Loop Road. It is the first road after the Musk Ox Farm. Turn left onto Farm Loop Road. The Kellogg Farm is the third driveway on the right. There will be a brown sign marking "DeWolf Kellogg Campus Spring Creek Farm". Turn right and drive to the end of the road, through the central farm area and up the hill to the big log house.

House Rules

There are six basic house rules for your safety and the upkeep of the house.

  • Please remove your shoes in the entryway before entering the house.
  • No smoking within the house or the entryway.
  • No candles at anytime.
  • Bring sleeping bags. If you use bedding belonging to the house, wash it and remake beds before leaving.
  • Please follow the clean up procedure.
  • Please take all trash and food with you.

Information

Living Room
Directions for lighting the fireplace are on the mantelpiece. Firewood can be found to the left, just outside the front door or in the entryway. In the hutch behind the front door you can find a basic First Aid Kit.

Dining Room
The cabinets in the dining room contain the dishes and are opened by pushing the doors. Silverware can be found in the drawer under the cabinets.

Kitchen
Cookware can be found in the kitchen by following the labels on the cabinets. Big pots and pans are in the cabinet to the right of the sink, in the pullout beneath the oven, and in the cabinet under the bread bin. Pot holders are in the small drawer to the right of the sink as well as the long drawer under the bread bin. Glasses and mugs are in the top cupboards. The cutting board pulls out of the island under the cupboard containing the mugs.

Cleaning supplies can be found under the sink. Please try to wait for a full load before running the dishwasher, but make sure to wash and put away dishes before leaving. Make sure the sink is clean and everything is put away.

Bathrooms
In all the bathrooms there are some towels in the cupboards and/or drawers. However, you are encouraged to bring your own, as the ones here must be washed and dried before you leave. In each bathroom there are also paper products and cleaning supplies.

Toilets
In an attempt to keep plumbing "healthy", please use the bins provided for all paper products, toilet paper, feminine products, etc.

Utility Closet
There is a small utility closet within the wall between the doorway to the kitchen and the bathroom doorway. In the closet are cleaning supplies, brooms, vacuum, etc.

Back Cupboard
The cupboard is in the back hallway in front of the bedroom door. In the cupboard there are paper towels and toilet paper.

Bedrooms
Sleeping bags are highly recommended. There are sheets available, but washing and drying them is the responsibility of those who sleep in them.

Trash Removal
Upon your departure, please take all trash that your group generated with you. Recycling is required and bins are available for this purpose. All recyclables may be left here in the appropriate bins and they will be taken care of for you.

We also encourage composting all food waste. Again, a bin is provided for this purpose. Please do not place meat or fish in the compost barrel. All other food waste is acceptable.
