"New Facility At Spring Creek Farm"

yurt
yurt - inside

A yurt has recently been constructed on Spring Creek Farm, to provide additional class space. Yurts are traditional Mongolian dwellings favored by nomadic people for their light weight, simple structure, and ease to move about. The yurt at Spring Creek is designed to hold large classes but to have a small ecological footprint on the environment. If desired, the yurt could be moved and the area easily changed back to grass land though with its serene location and the numerous opportunities it presents, this yurt won’t be traveling for a while.

On June 17, 2006 APU's Spring Creek Farm took new steps in accessing renewable energy with the installation of a 100ft wind monitor. The monitor is on loan from the Alaska Energy Authority for one year.

During that time, students and faculty will take readings to determine our capacity for wind power generated electricity. The location, generally plagued by strong winds from the Knik River in the spring and the Matanuska Glacier in the winter, may soon be able to turn those burdens into a blessing.
