![]() Summer VisitFrequently Asked Student QuestionsSign me up! How do I reserve a spot? Due to the limited space available you must reserve a spot prior to sending in registration information.
To make the reservation call the toll-free number (800 252 7528). We'll get your information, talk about appropriate airfare and
trip expectations, and discuss the needed clothing and gear. I'm signed up for the _____ trip, and I have some specific questions. Who should I talk to? You can reach any of us by calling the Admissions Office toll-free at 800 252-7528. How soon can we make travel reservations? Once you have reserved a trip with a credit card, or paid for a trip in full. Please do not make any travel plans until you have heard from our office that we have have received your payment. We don't want you to buy a ticket for a trip that's already full. May I bring my cell phone and will it work in Alaska? Feel free to bring your cell phone, but just be prepared to have very little coverage. Once you leave the road system up here, the cell reception quickly wanes. Will there be a safe place to store personal items while I'm in the field? Yes. Items that you choose not to bring with you in the field can be left in the on-campus apartment. The apartment will be locked while you are out. May I bring normal clothes to hang out in for the days we're not in the field? Yes, by all means bring any clothing that you would like for the days we'll be exploring campus and Anchorage. Are there an equal number of men and women on each trip? These trips are entirely first-come, first-serve. Most trips tend to be a nearly even split, however we have had trips with just men and trips with just women. How much personal spending money should I bring? Tricky question. We've had participants spend as little as $10 on the trip, and as much as a couple hundred. It really depends on what you would like to purchase for souvenirs, and how many. There really won't be much time to spend money other than the day we'll be exploring Anchorage and doing a few "touristy" things. How many students will be on each trip? How many counselors? K-Bay Buccaneers - 8 Cadillac Camping - 8 These trips have already begun to fill, be sure to check the trip descriptions for the remaining open spots. Each trip will have a minimum of two counselors with it at all times. Frequently Asked Parent QuestionsHow are the students picked up and dropped off at the airport? The Anchorage airport is easy to navigate. Once the student arrives in Anchorage, he/she will follow the signs and the crowd to the baggage claim. As they pass by the security gate we'll be waiting with an obnoxious sign at the bottom of the escalator. When it's time to get the students home we'll take them into the airport, make sure that they are checked in and have a boarding pass. We'll walk them to the security gate and say our goodbyes. We realize that for many students this is their first time travelling alone so we try to make it as easy as possible. My student won't have a cell phone on the trip. Will I be able to call him/her? One of the first things we have visitors do when they step off the plane in Anchorage is call home. Once we're settled on campus there will be a phone and a calling card available for quick calls home and to receive incoming calls. It's not a bad idea for students to bring a phone card if they think they might make longer than average calls home. What kind of supervision will there be? This is a very common question. Supervision will be constant both in the field and in Anchorage/campus. Please read over the letter that was sent to your student regarding the expected conduct on the trips and if there are any questions please feel free to call us anytime. With the new travel regulations will my student need a passport? No. A passport is not needed to fly to or depart from Alaska. Please note: Wilderness travel and recreation have inherent risks, especially with conditions present in the state of Alaska. Please carefully review the Participant Agreement form and the statement on the Registration Forms page. |
