The Outdoor ProgramNO Couch Potatoes! We believe that maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, while balancing work and school, is vital to your development. The last thing you want to do is come up to Alaska to be a couch potato! ![]() Outdoor recreation at Alaska Pacific mirrors the university's reverence for the natural world and its capacity to transform lives. The Outdoor Program challenges students to experience the vast wilderness of Alaska and other parts of the world with a "leave no trace" philosophy. Swim, jog, row, or play basketball in the Moseley Sports Center. Lift weights or take a turn on the APU Climbing Wall in the basement of Atwood Hall. Go on monthly trips to places like Baja (Mexico), Joshua Tree National Park (CA), Kenai Fjords National Park (AK), Prince William Sound, and many other cool spots with the Outdoor Program, or rent your own gear from OP and plan your own trip. ![]() No matter what you're into, OP offers something for everybody: kayaking, rafting, hiking, camping, birding, mountaineering, ice-climbing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, igloo building (great photo-op for you to show your friends what real Alaska is like!), and more. Enter APU's Pumpkin Fun Run. Dress warmly and don your skis for APU's Moonlight Ski. There is so much to do at APU it will be a challenge for you to stay stationary for very long! Even your Orientation has an active component. Journeys is easily the highlight of Fall Semester Orientation. Journeys is a backcountry wilderness experience that encourages you to get to know more about yourself and your new classmates. You engage in group decision making and shared responsibility exercises, and you keep a journal of your reflections and observations. Last fall Journeys took place at Hope, Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula, a stunning setting offering views of mountains, flora, fauna, and wildlife. |
