A New, Greener Way to Commute
By Miriam Mezzetti
A green, healthy lifestyle isn’t as hard as it looks! By changing simple routines, such as biking to work instead of driving, one can improve both one’s own health and the health of the environment. In order to encourage members of the Anchorage community who bike to work, Alaska Pacific University has partnered with Alaska Public Media to host a station as a part of Bike Anchorage’s Bike Fridays.
Bike Fridays give bike commuters an opportunity to enjoy refreshment and company on their way to or from work. The event is hosted on the last Friday of each month through August, and both new and seasoned bikers are welcomed to attend.
There are so many reasons to participate in Bike Fridays! By taking a bike to work, one can avoid rush hour traffic, enjoy the Anchorage scenery first-hand, and easily incorporate fitness into even the busiest of schedules. Biking to work is possible whether you live close to or far from your workplace. “Even if your commute is long,” notes Bike Fridays founding member Joan Diamond, “you can use the bus for part of your commute and then bike the rest.”
We are happy to see so many members of the Anchorage community enjoying their commute to and from work, and look forward to offering good food and good conversation to the bikers at the next Bike Friday event.
