A Message from Acting President Hilton Hallock – Summer and Fall 2021 plans
March 16, 2021
Dear APU Community,
Today, we are announcing a plan to return to primarily in-person instruction for the Summer and Fall 2021 terms. Some online courses will still be available, as they were before the pandemic, and campus housing will be available. We made this decision in part because of Alaska’s strong vaccination campaign, which now includes all residents 16 and older. As vaccines are distributed across the state, we are optimistic we can return to campus safely in the fall.
We know everyone is eager to return to our regular campus life, but the health of our community and our city remains a high priority. We will continue to follow guidelines from federal, state, and municipal health agencies. At this time, we plan to continue wearing masks and maintaining distance while on campus, and we will continue to require a badge ID or appointment to access campus buildings. Due to the anticipated size of the gathering, Spring Commencement will remain a virtual event. Given the uncertainty of the pandemic, APU will proceed with caution, flexibility, and a commitment to early communication if plans should change.
COVID-19 vaccinations or negative COVID tests are strongly encouraged before returning to campus and may be required for participating in certain activities. If you haven’t already done so, you can sign up for a vaccination through our partners at Southcentral Foundation here: http://vax.nuka.com. More Anchorage area appointments can be found here: https://anchoragecovidvaccine.org/. If you live elsewhere in Alaska, get started here: https://covidvax.alaska.gov.
The return to our regular operations would not be possible without the commitment of our APU community. Now 12 months into the global pandemic, we have yet to see community spread of the virus on our campus. That’s a testament to our shared commitment to keep each other safe. I am so impressed by and appreciative of the patience, persistence, and dedication of this community.
We are moving forward with caution and optimism as we plan for next school year and we look forward to seeing you all on campus this fall. Registration for Fall 2021 courses opens March 17.
