The Center for Climate and Health at Alaska Pacific University (CCH/APU) will execute activities related to environmental science, climate change adaptation, and public health programs including One Health and the Local Environmental Observer (LEO) Network. This position will work closely with the Center for Climate and Health at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (CCH/ANTHC) to support research, education and outreach in these focus areas. Note the CCH/ANTHC focuses on the Alaska, while the CCH/APU has focuses on the Circumpolar North. The home for LEO Network activities is hosted at the CCH/ANTHC. The One Health mission is to increase understanding about the connections between animal, environmental and public health. Key partners include CDC and UAF One Health program. The LEO Network mission is to support public health through increased understanding of environmental change and the effects (positive and negative) on communities. In addition to program administration, this position will support the growth of programs and capacity through community outreach and promotion, mentoring of students and interns, assisting in research efforts, and seeking funding opportunities. This position will play a key role in developing and supporting these programs.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
- Provide interagency coordination within APU programs and the partner Centers at ANTHC on activities related to One Health and climate change outreach and education.
- Support staff activities for the LEO Network, including training, webinar coordination, editing of platform content, and developing content for news articles and podcasts. May include travel and reporting on specific environmental change related events, and participation in the development meetings for the improvement and expansion of the Network.
- Perform community outreach via LEO Network and other CCH/APU projects to connect with network members, provide technical assistance on event reporting, develop and apply media, and assist with organization of quarterly One Health Group meetings.
- Assist in CCH/APU research activities including grant writing and reporting, coordination and program execution, assisting with federal requirements, and participation in partnership meetings.
- Identify funding opportunities and prepare grant proposals with the approval of APU and CCH/APU managers to expand the role and programs for CCH/APU.
- Provide administrative support for the office and classroom at Gould Hall at APU by acting as primary point of contact for public relations, serving as a resource for faculty and students engaging in CCH/APU/APU programs.
KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS
- Passion for working on environmental and health issues. Particularly with a focus in Northern regions to help communities become healthier, more resilient and able to adapt to a changing climate.
- Knowledge of basic principles of environmental health, public health, climate change, and community resilience.
- Interest in working with diverse knowledge systems including western science, and local and traditional knowledge.
- Knowledge and experience working in cross cultural settings.
- Knowledge of community engagement strategies and social media platforms that are current and relevant to Alaskan communities.
- Knowledge in grant management including seeking opportunities, submitting proposals, and writing reports preferred.
- Excellent skills in interpersonal relations, writing, editing, public speaking, and meeting facilitation and moderating, preferred.
- Skills and experience in meeting project or program management deliverables with limited supervision including time management and planning and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other office management tools.
- Experience and membership in the LEO Network preferred.
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
Bachelor of science in environmental studies, environmental public health or a related field, Or, 2-5 years of related experience in environmental science, climate change science or adaptation, environmental public health, and/or community engagement and outreach in climate and health.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Two – five years of related experience in environmental science, climate change science or adaptation, environmental public health, and/or community engagement and outreach in climate and health.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit, reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance, or kneel. The employee must be able to lift and/or carry boxes & packages weighing up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
Experience and membership in the LEO Network preferred.
May require international travel and travel to remote locations in Alaska.
Must be able to work at APU in an office setting.
