JOB SUMMARY: Tumyaraa: The Path Bridging Program seeks to enhance the college readiness of rural high school students by providing an integrated program of dual-credit distance courses, on-campus intensives, and year-round support. The Family School Counselor supports the Program Director and Grant Manager and works as a part of a team with APU Staff and Faculty and Partner School Districts and participating communities to create a caring climate and atmosphere through a comprehensive developmental school counseling program. By providing education, prevention, early identification and intervention, school counselors can help all children achieve academic success. The counselor reports to and is evaluated by the site principal. This position requires a valid Alaska type C certificate or equivalent.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
- Serves as liaison between APU and school counselors at project sites.
- Provides leadership at school counselor trainings each year.
- Utilizes appropriate counseling techniques to accommodate a variety of functioning levels.
- Acts as a student advocate.
- Supports and reinforces the key role of the classroom teacher.
- Serves as a consultant to staff and parents.
- Counsels individuals and small groups toward social and emotional resiliency.
- Consults with parents and other family member on individual student needs.
- Reports to Program Director.
- Perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS
- A valid Alaska type C special services certificate with endorsement as a school counselor or guidance and counseling preferred. A type C social work endorsement may be considered in lieu of the above requirements.
- Counseling/school based internship or teaching experience with secondary school age children.
- Training in Trauma Informed Care.
- Training in Social and Emotional Learning.
- Experience in providing behavioral and academic interventions with youth.
- High school guidance counseling experience preferred.
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
Bachelor’s Degree.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Four (4) years related experience.
MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
Must have a valid Alaska driver’s license and insurable by APU’s auto liability insurance carrier; must have a reliable vehicle.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Alaska Pacific University employees must possess the ability to read and write in English. This also includes the ability to communicate in English with school staff, co-workers, and the public; as well as have the ability to comprehend and carry out oral and written directions and understand and follow English instructions and written documents. Must have a valid Alaska driver’s license.
