Visiting Professor of Liberal Studies

The Liberal Studies Program at Alaska Pacific University (APU) invites applications for a three-quarters-time faculty position with rank depending on educational preparation and experience. Candidates should have specialization in philosophy or a closely related field, with documented experience teaching at the university level.

THE UNIVERSITY: APU is a small, private liberal arts university known for experiential and project-based learning. The university campus is in Anchorage, Alaska, a diverse city and home to more than 300,000 residents. APU offers a unique set of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral- level degrees, with emphasis on Alaska-critical and globally relevant issues. Focused on competency development and cultural relevancy, the APU curriculum fosters high-level intellectual and practical skills, a wide-ranging knowledge of science, cultures, and society, and an active commitment to personal and social responsibility.

THE PROGRAM AREAS: The Liberal Studies program area provides foundational courses in writing, critical thinking, and communication, and offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in Alaska Native Governance, Sustainability Studies, Creative and Professional Writing, and Liberal Studies (LS). LS majors work with an advisor to design a study plan exploring personal interests and professional aspirations, drawing together topics such as history, literature, cultural studies, the arts, philosophy, religion, and social sciences. Graduate programs include Creative Writing (MFA), and the Master of Arts (MA) program. The Liberal Studies program area is part of APU’s Institute of Culture & Environment, alongside Marine and Environmental Sciences, and Outdoor Studies. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The contract carries a 9-month teaching load of 18 credit hours for the 2023 – 2024 academic year. We are looking for candidates with teaching expertise in philosophy. Courses may include Critical Thinking, Epistemology, and Ethics. Responsibilities also include collaboration with the department to develop and enhance programs, and opportunities to assist with undergraduate capstone projects.

RANK AND SALARY: Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience and is proscribed by a university-wide salary range.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall 2023

QUALIFICATIONS: Requirements for the position include an earned Ph.D by July 1, 2023 in philosophy or a closely related field.
