Faculty & Staff FAQs

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Current symptoms for COVID-19 include mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough, muscle aches, and difficulty in breathing. Read more about COVID-19 Symptoms.

What should I do if one of my students or colleagues shows symptoms of COVID-19?

Remember, it is peak of the annual cold and flu season. It is more likely that they may have a cold or the flu than coronavirus. Practice preventative measures like:

  • Avoid close contact with others.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If water is not available, use hand sanitizer, with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you have cold or cough symptoms, cover your mouth/nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing. Immediately throw the tissue in the garbage.

What precautions can I take to stay healthy and prevent the spread of infections?

What is APU doing to minimize the risk of infection to students, faculty and staff?

We have a response team monitoring guidance and evaluating campus safety in light of the most current public health information.

What about events and large gatherings?

No events or meetings are allowed, unless a specific exemption applies. Exemptions include outdoor recreation but you must not be in a group larger than nine. Your group should only consist of household members. Please look at telecommuting options when planning a meeting. Last updated: 4/19/20

Is APU distributing masks for people to wear to prevent the spread of infection on our campuses?

No, APU is not distributing masks, but you are more than welcome to use a mask. Department of Health Social Services recommends that you wear a cloth face covering in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies). Has APU canceled any classes?

Some of the May Block courses that required travel or other face-to-face instruction we have canceled. As our usual process, we may cancel courses (or switch to an independent study format) for low enrollment as we get closer to the start dates. Check the course listing on the website for the up-to-date information. Last updated: 4/19/20

As an APU employee, do I still report to work?

Yes, the University will remain in operation. The University is not closed. Please check in with your supervisor to determine whether it is possible to work remotely.

Where can I go to get the latest APU information about coronavirus?

Vist www.alaskapacific.edu/coronavirus for the latest information.

Has moving to a distance-learning model changed the May term or Summer Courses?

All May term and Summer Courses have moved online or some form of distance delivery. We anticipate returning to our in-person instruction or our hybrid programs for the Fall semester. Check the course listing on the website for the up-to-date information. Last updated: 4/19/20

Can I leave my vehicle on campus?

Yes, however, you will need to register your vehicle with the Campus Safety office to ensure your vehicle is not towed.

Will registering for summer or fall 2020 be impacted?

Registration for summer and fall 2020 will proceed as normal.

Will I need to prepare to work remotely and what might that look like?

If you have the capacity to work remotely and work responsibilities can be carried out effectively from off campus, telecommuting for a limited period of time is an option. We also have spaces and technology resources on campus that accommodate working within guidelines for social distancing. Please check in with your supervisor to discuss details.

Will all my classes now be online?

Yes, with the exception of a few classes that require face-to-face instruction, APU will move all courses, including intensives, to distance delivery for the remainder of the semester. Please watch for an APU email from your instructor or Blackboard notification. Last updated: 4/19/20
