What’s your academic background?
Journalism & Public Communications at UAA including four incredible years at The Northern Light, the student newspaper.
Who inspires you?
My sons, Abe and Coen, inspire me to think about the future of Anchorage, Alaska and the world. My wife Tiffany, who works hard but efficiently, inspires me to think of better ways to complete projects. Outside of family, I’m inspired by people who turn their passion for something into a career.
What was the best concert you ever attended?
The Roots at the Egan Center in 2008. A super-lyrical MC with a high-energy backing band drawing from great catalog of work in front of an enthusiastic crowd. And a tuba player to boot. Catching one of Questlove’s drum sticks sealed the deal.
Where’s your favorite place in the world?
I love Anchorage. My #1 pick: The top of a Chugach front range peak on a summer evening with some tasty snacks and cold water. Another one: A sunny drive to Girdwood with an iced Kaladi Americano in my cup holder and good music on the radio.
If you could be any animal, which would you be?
A Canada goose. I’ve always wanted to fly plus they can swim and walk. I’m more of a gatherer than a hunter. They are monogamous; most couples stay together all of their lives and they are very protective of their young. And they travel regularly across North America.
What’s the last book you read?
At bedtime last night, Maurice Sendak’s “Chicken Soup With Rice.” But on my own “The Great Quake” by Henry Fountain. It was a must-read for me after the Nov. 30 earthquake.
What’s your favorite movie?
Tough question but I’ll go with “The Big Lebowski.”
What are you currently watching on Netflix?
I recently rolled through a few climbing documentaries.“The Dawn Wall” on Netflix, “Meru” on Amazon Prime and “Free Solo” on Hulu. Of the three, I’d say “Meru” was my favorite.
Who would you most like to swap places with for a day?
As a relatively unathletic lover of the game of basketball, I’ll choose Giannis “The Greek Freak” Antetokounmpo. He’s nearly 7 feet tall with a 7’3” wingspan and is incredibly athletic. It’d be fun to play basketball for a day as Giannis.
If you could visit anywhere in the world you’ve never been, where would you go?
My oldest son has a few books on Paris that we read regularly and he really wants to visit. I’d love to experience the history of the city with him from the steps of the Sacré-Cœur to the modern art of the inside-out Pompidou Centre.
What’s your secret talent that no one knows about?
I love trivia and one year I took home more than $1,000 in prize money at local bar trivia nights.
If you were a crayon, what color would you be?
Blue. It’s been my favorite color since childhood.
Who is your least favorite superhero?
Robin always seemed pretty lame to me. What exactly does he bring to the table?
