November was a great month for the Fisheries, Aquatic Science and Technology Laboratory!

The Fisheries, Aquatic Science and Technology (FAST) Lab had a major presence Alaska’s largest gathering of fisheries professionals, the Alaskan Chapter of the American Fisheries Society annual meeting. This year the meeting was held in Homer on November 3 – 6. Students and faculty did an outstanding job of representing Alaska Pacific University and the FAST Lab through four poster presentations, six oral presentations, and volunteer work.

maggie-schafferFAST Lab undergraduate student Maggie Schaffer was awarded the prestigious Molly Ahlgren Scholarship from the Alaska Chapter of the American Fisheries Society. Maggie is entering her senior year at Alaska Pacific University and is majoring in Marine Biology. She has worked closely with the FAST Lab on several projects including razor clam surveys, scallop benthic image analysis, juvenile salmon scale imaging, deep-sea skate aging and Pacific halibut aging. She accepted this honor during the AFS awards ceremony banquet.
