A native of New Orleans, Kevin’s interest in the outdoors and experience as an Eagle Scout, specifically among the wetlands of southern Louisiana, led him to study environmental engineering at the University of Florida, from where he graduated in 2009. After hiking most of the Appalachian Trail, he enrolled in the theology program at Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., where he received a Ph.D. in 2018. Like where his studies focused on theological anthropology and political theology in the light of St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Augustine of Hippo. His research interests are twofold: grace’s effect upon the individual and his or her virtues, and the role of grace in society. Like wetlands, where water and land meet, grace is fascinating because it is where God and humanity meet. Since coming to APU in 2020 he has broadened his research to consider inculturation and the theology of creation. His duties as Cardinal Newman Chair of Catholic Theology to promote theological discussion in Anchorage in an ecumenical and public key have given him further opportunities to think about how different things interact and remind him of the medieval philosophical and theological principle that one distinguishes in order to unite.
He and his wife Beth have four kids, a love of good food and books, and an inordinate attachment to coffee with chicory, taken as cafe au lait.
