Overview

Alaska Pacific University (APU) is now the provider of academic credit for the Community Health Aide certification. Any credits previously completed through the University of Alaska Fairbanks will transfer to APU. Completion of the CHAP certification process leads to the certificate in Community Health at APU, which aligns with the associate degree in Community Health and several bachelor’s degrees in healthcare and healthcare management.

The process for receiving academic credit for CHA certification remains the same. For more information about the APU degree programs or transferring credit, contact admissions@alaskapacific.edu.

APU’s Community Health programs offer an Undergraduate Certificate and Associate of Applied Science degree to prospective students. These enhanced educational options provide Community Health Aides the opportunity to utilize their training and education to better support the health, care, and wellness of their communities across Alaska.

Create a Pathway. The Community Health Programs offer the opportunity to enhance professional skills and qualifications by advancing education. At APU, Community Health students have a clear attainment pathway from an undergraduate certificate to associate of applied science.

Timely Response to Workforce Needs. The Community Health Aide program has provided essential primary health care services across Rural Alaska since 1968. CHAP has expanded to a network of 550 practitioners fulfilling healthcare needs across 170 Rural Alaskan villages.

Degree Fit

Now, prospective students have the opportunity to pursue the Community Health pathway to earn an Undergraduate Certificate or Associate of Applied Science at APU.

Community Health Aides must complete the following courses:

  • Community Health Aide I
  • Community Health Aide II
  • Community Health Aide III
  • Community Health Aide IV
  • Community Health Aide Preceptorship

Community Health students participate in training sessions at a regional Training Centers and provide onsite care in their local village clinic.

Students interested in pursuing the Associate of Applied Science in Community Health will enroll in coursework designed to attain competencies in five areas:

  • Effective Communication
  • Critical Thinking
  • Cultural & Historical Perspective
  • Scientific Inquiry
  • Ethical Engagement

These five competencies result in wide-ranging knowledge and skills that meet the critical workforce demands across many professions and industries in the state of Alaska.

To pursue the Undergraduate Certificate in Community Health, applicants must be employed by a Tribal Health Organization as a Community Health Aide.
