Health and Wellness at Alaska Pacific University


Care and Support for our Students

Your well-being is crucial for your success at APU. We are committed to ensuring you have access to essential healthcare services and wellness support during your academic journey. Primary Health Care is provided through our partnership with the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC), students paying the APU Wellness Fee are eligible to receive basic primary care services at the Alaska Native Medical Center Internal Medicine Clinic. Additional Mental Health services are available through the APU Counseling and Wellness Center. Several other campus services provide support and prevention measures to help students deal with stress and find balance during their time at APU.

Taking care of your mind and body is essential for academic success and overall well-being. Here are some tips to help you thrive at APU:

  1. Prioritize Sleep: Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night to support focus, memory, and energy levels.
  2. Stay Active: Incorporate regular physical activity, such as walking, hiking, or yoga, to improve mood and reduce stress.
  3. Eat Well: Fuel your body with balanced meals that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
  4. Practice Stress Management: Try mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, to stay calm and centered.
  5. Build Connections: Engage with peers and the APU community to foster meaningful relationships and a sense of belonging.
  6. Use Available Resources: Take advantage of campus health services, counseling, and wellness programs to support your mental and physical health.

Primary Care


The Alaska Native Medical Center Internal Medicine Clinic offers a range of basic primary care services to support students’ health and well-being. Services include routine check-ups, treatment for common illnesses, and management of chronic health conditions.

These services provide convenient, high-quality care for our students, helping you stay healthy and focused on achieving your academic goals. For more information about services or eligibility, contact the clinic directly or reach out to Ben Hahn, Dean of Students at 907-564-8289

To access basic primary care services at the ANMC Internal Medicine Clinic:

  • APU students can schedule an appointment in advance or visit as a walk-in.
  • Students must present their APU ID with a current semester sticker.
  • Semester stickers are available free of charge at the APU IT Office, located on the first floor of Grant Hall on APU’s Main Campus.

Services* provided to APU Students will include:

  • Treatment for minor illness and injury
  • Routine and pre-participation physical exams
  • Women’s and men’s health appointments
  • Contraceptive counseling
  • STI screening and treatment
  • Immunizations
  • TB screening
  • Stable chronic disease management (i.e., asthma, diabetes, hypertension)

*The cost of ancillary services, such as laboratory tests, imaging services, pharmacy items, elective surgical procedures, and services provided outside the internal medicine clinic for which students may be referred, are not included.

Mental Health Support


APU offers the Counseling and Wellness Center (CWC) as a confidential and safe place for students, to discuss topics such as:

  • Support in making cognitive and behavioral changes
  • Exploring emotional distress, family dynamics, and relationship challenges
  • Goal setting and managing academic anxiety and stress
  • Developing greater self-awareness, mindfulness practices, and nervous system regulation strategies

The Counseling and Wellness Center is staffed by Counseling Psychology graduate students who are supervised by a Licensed Professional Counselor.

The CWC adheres to the standards of confidentiality as set forth by counseling ethics and Alaska state law. Students under the age of 18 require parent or guardian permission. Though the CWC does not offer psychiatric or nursing services, the CWC offers a variety of community referrals as requested or deemed appropriate. The CWC offers a strengths-based and supportive environment for clients to receive counseling.

Some students may be eligible for mental health services through the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC), which provides care for Alaska Native and American Indian individuals aged 18 and older. To get started, students will need a referral from the Alaska Native Medical Center or the CWC. Cultural Connections


Connect with other students and share your culture at our Shel ch’naq’ahnilu Center. Students are invited to hang out, create study groups, and just commune around food and fun.

Spiritual Health


Spiritual health contributes to overall well-being and provides a foundation for emotional balance and a sense of direction. Our Chaplain creates space for self-care and exploration.

Nature’s Healing


Nature offers a holistic approach to wellbeing, addressing both the mind and the body. APU offers many activities and equipment to access our amazing environment.

Money stress can significantly impact your overall well-being, our financial aid office can help and direct you to further resources to help you feel financially secure and empowered.
