Photo Essay: Backcountry Travel and Packrafting Gets a Taste of Alaska Fall (and Wilderness Pizza)

October 19, 2017

Over Fall Block, a handful of Outdoor Studies students took a course in backcountry travel to develop their abilities to plan, prepare for, and undertake a significant Alaskan wilderness traverse using packrafting and lightweight approaches. Not sure what that means? Here’s a look.

Crossing Icicle Creek in Chugach State Park.  Funky bridge beats wet feet.

Extracurriculars during some down time.

Crossing Valdez creek in the Clearwater Mountians, a beautiful little sub-range of the Alaska Range.

Cool boating on Spencer Lake, APU packrafting students “warmed-up” paddling among the glacial iceburgs before paddling down the Placer river.

Backcountry Pizza!  Clearwater Creek’s best grinds.

Chilling out at Spencer Lake.

Gulkana Wild and Scenic River, boogie water.

Group River Crossing practicing during our Swiftwater Safety Course.

Cruising the tundra on our way down to Clearwater Creek.  Fall comes early up there.

Gulkana River Canyon.  Optional Extra Credit.

Traversing the area between Grogg and Button Lakes, Clearwater Mountains.

Mellow time on Clearwater Creek.

Taking a closer look at some options, Gulkana Wild and Scenic River in our sights.
