Joe Sonnier, Business Administration, MBA Class of 2019

Alumnus Joe Sonnier has built a career in Alaska defined by purpose, adaptability, and community impact, moving from early uncertainty to leadership roles across nonprofit, corporate, and philanthropic sectors. Today, he serves in Alaska’s philanthropic space with the Alaska Community Foundation, where his work focuses on expanding access to education and strengthening statewide opportunity.

Joe’s path to Alaska Pacific University began with a need for flexibility as a working professional. What drew him in was not only the hybrid format, but the small, relationship-driven learning environment. “The smaller class sizes, the more intimate feel of the university just worked really well,” he shared. A conversation over coffee with faculty member Carol Lund ultimately confirmed his decision. “I was done. Sold. It was a no brainer.”

At APU, Joe found a program that allowed him to immediately apply what he was learning while continuing to work full time. That experience helped shape a career that quickly accelerated after graduation, including leadership roles overseeing large-scale financial operations. “The MBA is what made them look at my resume,” he said, reflecting on how the degree opened new doors.

One of the most consistent themes in Joe’s journey is the importance of reflection and resilience. He points to setbacks and challenges, including dissertation pressure and missed promotions, as pivotal moments in his growth. “Nobody likes being rejected,” he said. “But you can pivot a lot faster when you’re not putting yourself under so much pressure.”

That mindset now informs his leadership approach in philanthropy, where he focuses on simplifying systems and expanding access. At the Alaska Community Foundation, he helped lead the consolidation of more than 70 scholarship applications into a single streamlined system, dramatically increasing accessibility for students statewide.

“Scholarships and postsecondary education change people’s lives,” Joe said. “We are stewards of people’s hopes and dreams.”

For Joe, impact is rooted in stewardship and trust. His work centers on building systems that serve people more effectively while honoring community knowledge and experience.

Looking back on his time at APU, Joe emphasizes the importance of connection and persistence. “I still rely heavily on my MBA cohort,” he shared. “Those relationships only get better over time.”

His advice to students and alumni is simple: stay connected, stay open, and stay grounded in purpose. For Joe, success is not defined by titles, but by meaningful impact.
