MFA for a Day – Summer Residency Program

The low-residency MFA at APU will be holding its summer residency from July 12 to July 23, 2023. The residency will be open to members of the community for a fee of $75/day.

Workshops

In the mornings, two to three workshops will run simultaneously, each focused on the submissions of two writers, spending roughly an hour on each submission. Students enrolled in the program are instructed to submit the work that they’ve done the most work on, that they’re not sure what to do with next, that needs eyes for final revision. Students are expected to bring their work through rounds of revision on their own beforehand, which often includes feedback from their most trusted readers. In all cases, the work cannot be previously published.

Community members can sign up for two separate workshop days, with the submission of up to 10 double-spaced pages of prose, or two poems (no more than four pages total), per workshop.

To be considered for workshop, participants are asked to send a sample of the work that they will be workshopping: 2-3 pages of prose or 1-2 pages of poetry.

Welcome Dinner

All MFA for a Day participants are invited to the welcome dinner at the president’s house on campus on Saturday, July 12, starting with a reception at 5pm, followed by dinner at 6pm, catered by the Writer’s Block.

Scholarships

Scholarships to cover the full $75 fee are available to members of the APU community (students, alumni, faculty, staff, employees of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium), as well as for those interested in enrolling in the program in the future.

If interested, please contact MFA director Dave Onofrychuk at donofrychuk@alaskapacific.edu

Enrollment deadline is Wednesday, June 25, by which time the workshop submissions should be sent to the program director for distribution to participants via OneDrive folders.
