Andrea Hackbarth
Andrea’s writing explores the boundaries between literary and artistic genres, asking readers to reconsider the function of literature. Her work is rooted in a poetic background that respects traditional structures while incorporating elements of the essay, flash fiction, and visual arts. She holds a BA in English from Lawrence University and an MFA in Creative Writing and Literary Arts from the University of Alaska Anchorage, where she was awarded the Jason Wenger Award for Excellence in Creative Writing. She has also received the 2025 Alaska Literary Award from the Alaska Arts & Culture Foundation, as well as Individual Artist Awards from the Rasmuson Foundation in 2022 and 2026.
Her first hybrid prose-poem chapbook, waveforms: a short course in piano tuning (Harbor Editions), draws inspiration from her work as a piano technician. Other work has appeared in Prairie Schooner, American Literary Review, YesPoetry, and other print and online journals. She has called Alaska home since 2011 and currently resides with her ten-year-old son and a small menagerie of pets in Palmer where she also serves as a board member of the Palmer Arts Council, leading monthly literary salons and open mic events.
