I am Jessica Lewis-Nicori, and my Yup’ik name is Kaagyugaq. I am from Chefornak and an enrolled Tribal member of the Chefornak Tribe. I completed my post-secondary education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, earning a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology and Conservation as well as an M.Ed. in Secondary Science Teaching.
At APU, I work through the Navigating the New Arctic Community Office grant. Much of my work focuses on making research, products, and outcomes accessible to Arctic community members, as well as supporting publications that facilitate a better understanding of NNA-CO and related research. The Nuna Zine and Arctic Together Podcast highlight broad communication efforts from both research and artist communities in the Arctic. A big effort that the office at APU supports is coproduction of knowledge. The Arctic Research is Relationship class showcases one effort to inform the research community about coproduction of knowledge, with knowledge and lessons learned that are immediately applicable to participants’ work and research.
When I am not working, I love being outside with my family to hunt, fish, pick berries, or just take hikes and enjoy nature. I have tanned hides from skinning to completion, sewing a malaggai (trapper’s hat) for my husband. I also love to read.
