Live-On Requirement

Live-On Requirement

The two-year live-on requirement is a commitment between students and the University to enhance student success. We know that students who live on campus are more likely to stay enrolled, graduate on time, and feel connected to the campus community. Research shows that living on campus has several positive outcomes, including retention, extracurricular involvement, positive feelings about campus social climate, personal growth and development, interpersonal relationships, and faculty and staff interactions.

Students are required to live in APU student housing and take part in the meal plan when all of the following are true:

  • Student is single
  • Student is enrolled full-time at APU
  • Student has a permanent legal residence beyond 60 miles from APU
  • Student has earned less than 60 hours of college credit

This policy applies to all entering classes at APU, for their first two years.

Students may petition Campus Life for a waiver of the live-on requirement for the reasons listed below:

  • A student is married and/or has dependent children
  • A student has immediate family or a legal guardian living within 60 miles of APU
  • A student is at least 21 years old prior to the residence halls opening day for the requesting a waiver
  • A student is experiencing a medical hardship
  • A student has a documented family need, requiring them to remain at home with their family

*Students must provide proper documentation to support their waiver request. Waiver requests for exemption and accompanying documentation must be submitted to Campus Life at least 14 days prior to the first day of classes for the semester in which exemption is being requested.

Release from the on-campus requirement must be approved by the Director of Campus Life. If denied, applicants may appeal to the Dean of Students within 5 business days of the notification of denial. All decisions of the Dean of Students shall be final.

Enrolled students who do not comply with this policy or who have not received exemption status will be charged the cost of a traditional double room. The student will receive an email from Campus Life indicating that the residence hall charges will be added to their student account.
