Campus Safety at APU


Seven days a week – we are here for you.

Our Campus Safety Office is a resource for all students, staff faculty and visitors and is here to keep our campus safe and prepared in case of an emergency. We are committed to providing the APU community with a healthy and safe environment conducive to intellectual pursuits and personal development.

Campus Safety Office Location
The main office for Campus Safety is located on the 1st floor of the Atwood Center. The office is open from 8am – Noon and 1pm – 5pm, Monday through Friday.

Campus Safety Statistics


Alaska Pacific University carefully monitors the safety of students, faculty, and staff while they attend the University. The Campus Safety office works closely with the Housing and Residence Life office of the University to help create a safe and caring learning environment.

The Federal Clery Act requires all colleges and universities to collect and disclose crime information that occurs on campus.  The  annual safety report  includes information on personal safety, crime prevention and select university procedures and policies.

Two police agencies near to the APU campus publish crime statistics on websites listed below. The University of Alaska Anchorage reports crime statistics for their campus which is adjacent to part of the APU Campus at: https://www.uaa.alaska.edu/safety/

Parking


Be sure to get your APU Parking Decal!

Campus parking is FREE! All APU community members are required to register their vehicles and place an APU Parking Decal on their vehicle windshield. Decals are available from the Campus Safety Office located on the 1st floor of the Atwood Center or at the Grant Hall Information Desk.

Parking permits must be placed on the inside of your driver’s windshield in a location that is easily visible from the outside. Please return parking permits to Campus Safety when/if vehicle ownership changes. Handicapped parking is available for each building.

Parking regulations and violations are enforced by the Campus Safety Office. Consequences for parking violations may include warnings, fines, vehicle booting, and towing.

Parking Violations include:

  • Sleeping in vehicles
  • Parking in front of a fire hydrant
  • Parking in multiple parking spots
  • Parking in a no parking area
  • Parking in handicapped parking without a permit
  • Parking overnight (allowed in the Atwood Main lot and Carr-Gottstein lot )
  • Un-registered campus vehicle (no APU parking permit)
  • Significant vehicle maintenance
  • Parking a recreational vehicle and/or trailer without approval
  • Speeding on APU roadways (25mph limit)
  • Exceeding 15 minute limit in loading zones
  • Reckless driving/endangerment to the community
  • Driving while influenced by drugs/alcohol
  • Possession of a derelict/abandoned vehicle

Students, staff, and faculty can park at the APU/UAA Consortium Library in the parking lots closest to the library. Please see the map for details. All vehicles must have a current APU window decal or mirror hanging tag. All window decals must be located on the driver’s side of the windshield in the lower corner. The library parking lot is enforced by UAA Parking Services, so please watch where you park and park in between the lines to avoid getting fined.

Alaska Pacific University assumes no responsibility for any damages, theft, or personal injury involving vehicles parked in University lots. Efforts will be made to contact vehicle owners to inform them of vehicle break-ins, hit and run damage, headlights left on or situations in which moving your vehicle is necessary before doing so (snow plowing, construction, etc.).

Electrical outlets are provided for block or circulating car heaters in the Atwood Center parking lot and they are at a first come, first serve status. Vehicles being left on-campus for an extended period of time should have prior permission from the Dean of Student’s office through the Campus Safety Office (907-564-8888).

Building Hours


Public access to campus buildings are as follows:

  • Grant Hall, Carr-Gottstein Academic Center and Gould Hall: 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
  • Atwood Center: 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
  • Faculty, staff and student access outside public access hours will require an ID for badge access.

The above building hours are subject to change during holiday breaks, certain other events which would require more limited public access hours, or at the discretion of APU administration.

Traditional residence halls are secured 24 hours a day and accessible only by residents through an ID badge system and keys.

APU Emergency Notification System


APU students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to download LiveSafe, a free app which provides a number of tools designed to keep APU community members safe.  LiveSafe is a free app available for download the iPhone App Store or Google Play.

With LiveSafe, APU community members will be able to:

  • Receive real-time campus updates such as moose and bear and alerts and campus closures.
  • Report an incident or safety concern directly to the Office of Campus Safety.
  • Quick access to phone number like the Office of Campus Safety or the Anchorage Police Department non-emergency number.
  • Share location with friends as you walk to your destination.
  • Link to campus safety resources.
  • A Safety Toolbox which includes links to important safety related resources.
