A food security and food sovereignty partnership connecting urban and rural communities in Alaska
What We Do
Alaska Resilience Farms (ARF) formed in 2021 in response to Alaska’s changing climate and growing concerns around food insecurity in underserved rural and urban communities.
Since then, the network has grown into a collaborative partnership that connects villages, small communities, and urban areas across the state to strengthen local food systems and expand knowledge sharing around small-scale agriculture. Through workshops, technical assistance, and community-driven knowledge exchange events, ARF supports Alaskans looking to increase local food production while also exploring culturally appropriate approaches to the stewardship and cultivation of traditional Alaska Native foods and medicines.

How We Do It
ARF’s work is rooted in two major avenues of action:

Road Show Garden Visits
ARF expanded its work by helping communities re-establish and strengthen local gardens by offering on-the-ground support and infrastructure development alongside local Garden Champions. As many partner communities enter their third and fourth growing seasons, the focus continues to evolve toward long-term sustainability and adapting each project to meet the unique needs of the community.

Knowledge Exchanges
ARF’s Knowledge Exchanges are collaborative gatherings for rural and urban Indigenous communities designed to bring growers together to share agricultural knowledge, cultural practices, and lived experiences. Rather than focusing on one-way instruction, these exchanges create opportunities for participants to learn from one another while strengthening statewide connections around food systems and local growing practices.
