Promoting Soil Health in Alaska

Overview

Alaska Pacific University’s Soil Health Program seeks to promote soil health in Alaska through small grants open to Tribal Conservation Districts, Villages, and individuals. Our grant program embodies APU’s core values and commitment to sustainable agriculture by directly aligning with the soil health goals outlined by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). We believe in nurturing a healthier, more resilient environment through collaborative efforts that enrich the lives of all Alaskans, particularly tribal communities.

Activities and projects eligible for this grant program should align with the following criteria: 

  • Tribal Community Collaboration:
    Projects ideally involve collaboration with tribal communities in Alaska. 
  • Soil Health Improvement:
    Initiatives that focus on practices and activities that contribute to the enhancement of soil health, such as soil testing, erosion control, nutrient management, cover cropping, and sustainable agriculture techniques 
  • Education and Outreach:
    Programs that educate and raise awareness about soil health principles within tribal communities are highly encouraged. 
  • Sustainability:
    Projects that prioritize sustainable and environmentally responsible practices that benefit both the soil and the community. 
  • Measurable Impact:
    Grant proposals that clearly outline the expected outcomes and how they will be measured.
