Land Stewardship at Alaska Pacific University
The Indigenous Land Stewardship efforts at APU are deeply rooted in care for the land and Indigenous perspectives, focusing on collaborative efforts led by the Northern Latitudes Partnerships (NLP) with five Tribes that have formed Tribal Conservation Districts (TCD). Since 2021, APU has worked to connect these TCDs to the Indigenous Sentinels Network (ISN), created by the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island, to empower communities to take a leading role in environmental monitoring and stewardship. The ISN blends Indigenous Traditional Knowledge, local expertise, and scientific data, fostering a holistic approach to ecosystem management and resource preservation.
At APU, this initiative supports tribally-led programs by providing technical assistance and organizing regional workshops that bring together partners, landowners, and resource managers to share knowledge, identify priorities, and build stronger, creative community connections.
