Michael Orr, MBA Class of 2003

Alumnus Michael Orr has built a career in commercial banking and executive leadership defined by adaptability, service, and a commitment to mentoring the next generation of professionals. More than twenty years after earning his MBA from Alaska Pacific University, he continues to credit APU with shaping how he approaches leadership, collaboration, and lifelong learning.

Orr describes his entry into banking as an “accidental career,” beginning in economics before being encouraged into commercial lending and graduate study. “I struggled with the format at first,” he said of APU’s project-based MBA. “But working effectively in teams became one of the most valuable things I learned.” That hands-on, collaborative approach shifted how he understood both education and leadership.

Following graduation, Orr advanced into senior banking roles, helped launch a mergers and acquisitions consulting firm, and later returned to banking during the 2008 financial crisis. “Optimism was probably the one thing we really had to latch onto,” he reflected. “Not false optimism, authenticity.”

Beyond banking, Orr’s APU experience included international work with the Red Cross and USAID on a poverty alleviation project in Chukotka, Russia. The experience reinforced his belief in leadership grounded in service and global awareness. “There was this ethos that you should do something meaningful and contribute back,” he said.

Today, Orr serves as a mentor to emerging professionals in banking and supports Arctic-focused scholarship initiatives, including the Caleb Pungowiyi Memorial Scholarship Committee. “It’s rewarding to watch people grow,” he shared. “You get to feel part of a continuum.”

For Orr, leadership extends beyond the workplace into daily life, where he continues to emphasize curiosity, culture, and connection. Whether guiding young professionals or sharing language and heritage with his daughter, he remains grounded in purpose.

His story reflects a lasting APU legacy of collaborative learning, adaptable leadership, and meaningful contribution to community.
