Recreational Programs

Your Path to Wellness

Our Mission

Recreation Programs strives to provide fitness and wellness opportunities for the APU Community as well as members of the Anchorage community. We also strive to provide leadership opportunities for APU students to work for Recreation Programs and Outdoor Programs.

From introductory kayaking clinics and swim training classes, to pick-up basketball the staff in Recreation Programs work hard to offer a variety of programs and activities to meet the needs of our campus community. Visit the Moseley Sports Center and pick up our most current schedule.

Have an idea for a campus event or activity? Let us know! We often sponsor student led events. We also have employment opportunities specifically for APU students to teach swim classes, instruct fitness classes, life guard, or to work as a front desk monitor.

Swimming Classes

Alaska Pacific University believes all Alaskans have the right to learn how to swim and perform self-rescue techniques in a positive, welcoming environment. To help the community achieve these skills, APU offers Youth Group swim lessons from late September to mid-May every year. Private and semi-private swim lessons during the summer months are limited due to decreased swim instructor availability.

If you are seeking swim lessons for adults, there is a program offered through the spring and summer. You can access information on those lessons by clicking this link. https://swamalaska.org/learn-to-swim/

Biking at APU

Alaska Pacific University promotes biking to encourage healthy, active, and sustainable lifestyles for students, faculty, and staff.

Trails
Our APU trails link up to the Anchorage municipality trails. Use the Anchorage trail system to go to down town Anchorage, the Westchester Lagoon, the Coastal Trail, Kincaid Park, Far North Bicentennial Park, and many others Anchorage parks and areas! The Anchorage trail system covers 10,000 acres, 190 parks all connected by 400 miles of trails.

Please avoid earthen trails during muddy, soft, ground conditions. In Alaska during the melt out season this means staying off the unpaved trails until April or even June. In the winter only use the multi use trails and stay off of ski only trails as they are groomed specifically for skiers. You can rent classic or skate skis at the Outdoor Programs equipment rental room located in the Atwood Basement.

Bike and Ride
Did you know that your APU ID card is also a bus pass? APU students, faculty, and staff can ride any Anchorage bus for free! When riding the bus you can take your bike along too, including fat bikes! If unsure how to load you bike on the bus’s bike rack just ask the driver to show you how. Bus route 10 stops at the APU sign every 15 minutes between 6 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on weekdays, and continues until 11:30 p.m. at a reduced schedule.

Bike Racks
There are bike racks at all of the APU buildings on campus. Grant Hall, Carr Gottstein, and Atwood also offer covered bike racks.

Shower Facilities
After your commute Staff, Faculty, and Students can all shower for free either at the Moseley Sports Center or at the locker rooms located in the Atwood Fitness Center.

Bike to Work Day
Bike to Work Day happens each May. Participate by biking to work and stopping at several points along trails and businesses: there are tents encouraging bikers with bacon, coffee, and baked goods.

Bike Maintenance
Need help with bike maintenance or repair? Contact Outdoor Programs at op@alaskapacific.edu.

Last year 30 employees and students participated in the Green Light Ride Challenge. A total of 10,356 miles were logged saving 4,622 lbs of CO2. The challenge begins every year on Bike to Work day in May.

Swedish Massage

The most common form of massage, concentrating on the muscles and connective tissues of the body for improved circulation, relaxation and overall well-being.

Deep Tissue Massage

Involves slow strokes that reach deeper into the muscles and connective tissue to release chronic aches and pains.

Sports Massage

The goal of sports massage is to enhance the athlete’s performance. The massage involves every part of the athlete’s body, concentrating on those muscle groups that are involved in the sport, and may include facilitated stretching to release tight muscles.

Trigger Point Therapy

A trigger point is a highly irritable localized spot of exquisite tenderness in a nodule in a palpable taut band of muscle tissue. Taut bands tend to restrict range of motion by limiting a muscles ability to lengthen. The safest and most effective method of trigger point therapy is deep stroking massage applied directly to the trigger point.

Craniosacral Therapy

Works with the brain and spinal cord. It is a very gentle and relaxing technique that helps relieve pain, headaches, stress, tension, and more.

  • Deep relaxation and stress reduction
  • Relief of muscle tension and stiffness
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Enhances range of motion
  • Aids in injury prevention and recovery
  • Increases athletic performance
